Dear readers,
I am happy to announce the fourth volume of StyleZeitgeist magazine. Putting it together has been another arduous but ultimately immensely gratifying experience. Looking back on it, it turned out to be quite a Belgian issue, with half of our contributors and subjects having something to do with Belgian fashion design. This is no accident, considering this country’s immense contribution to the world of fashion during the last few decades.
I am blessed with an extraordinarily talented team of writers and photographers. Philippe Pourhashemi outdid himself with odes to Dries van Noten and Martin Margiela, and his words were adequately matched by the gorgeous photography of Marleen Daniels and Cici Olsson, who was granted exclusive access to Margiela’s artisanal atelier in Paris.
I wrote what I consider to be the definitive article on the designer Aitor Throup – it stands at over five-and-a-half thousand words and spans 25 pages, including the stellar photography by our photo editor Arto Puolimatka.
Our arts editor, Matin Momen, did an outstanding job depicting the reserved Russian photographer Alexey Titarenko. Daniel Franco penned a profile of the tattoo artist Thomas Hooper, who also graciously agreed to design our cover.
We were privileged to go behind the scenes at Maurizio Amadei’s atelier for our Work in Process column, documenting the making of the m.a.+ Fall/Winter 2013 collection.
Veerle Windels profiled the iconic Belgian creative duo of the photographer Ronald Stoops and his wife, the makeup artist Inge Grognard.
Keeping in mind our goal of bringing intelligence into the fashion dialogue, I interviewed Linda Loppa, the former head of the fashion program at the Antwerp Royal Academy, who is now bringing her magic to Polimoda in Florence.
Continuing our tradition of fusing fashion with other aspects of culture, two of our editorials took a cinematic turn with homages to Tarkovsky’s “Stalker” and Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal.” Other editorials were done by Julien Claessens, who has been Olivier Theyskens photographer since the early years, and by Gautier Peregrin, who got rare access to Carol Christian Poell’s Fe-Male collection.
As always, we have tried to infuse this volume with as much soul and passion as we possess. I hope you enjoy it.
