Katsuya Kamo was a pioneer in design, particularly renowned for his sculptural headpieces showcased on the runways for brands such as Undercover, Junya Watanabe, and Chanel. Kamo’s work epitomized the blend of artistic beauty and innovation in the fashion scene.
Katsuya Kamo was a brilliant artist who created what he called “head sculptures” for runway shows for Junya Watanabe, Jun Takahashi’s Undercover, and Anrealage. He also occasionally worked with Chanel and Haider Ackermann. You have seen his iconic pieces that contributed to the overall image and runway awe of those brands even if you did not know Kamo’s name.
If by chance you will find yourself in Tokyo at the end of March, make sure to stop by the Kamo Head exhibit at Omotesando Hills. Katsuya Kamo was an astoundingly talented creator, whose head pieces regularly graced the catwalks of Undercover, Junya Watanabe, and Chanel. Kamo prematurely passed away in 2020 at the age of 54. On view from March 21st to April 2nd, the exhibit, titled KAMO HEAD, Katsuya Kamo Works 1996-2000 will display an array of objects from his vast body of work. It will consist of 400 objects, 200 of which will be head pieces.

Several days ago we learned of the passing of the milliner and hairdresser Katsuyo Kamo. He was one of the most creative and sought after collaborators, working with Undercover, Junya Watanabe, Anrealage in Japan, and Europeans like Haider Ackermann, Chanel, and Fendi. His incredibly headpieces were especially indispensable to the image-making at Undercover, whose designer Jun Takahashi counted Kamo as a friend.
