No... I don't mean one from Ikea. After years of clothing neglect due to financial and personal reasons I am going through a re-invention. Change is good I am told. I have very few clothes and need to start building a wardrobe. Starting pretty much from scratch apart from one or two items is a bit daunting. I need some help... not so much with what clothes or style to buy but more about how to put one together. I don't want to end up with a collection of clothes that don't work as outfits. I don't have money to waste. This may seem like a naive question but having a blank canvas it is hard to know where to start.

Agreed with NDF. Add to the work question whether you have a dress code.Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months - Oscar Wilde

In addition to what ndf said, style should be personal. It doesn't need to match what you do, or how people expect you to dress, or anything like that, but it should be yours.
Figuring out how you would like to look (and assuming it's something compatible with your physique) is a start, but if you're just now beginning to reconstruct a wardrobe, you will find that there are plenty of things you pick up which don't see regular wear and things you decide aren't what you were really hunting. I would strongly advise starting with cheaper items, and only 1-2 outfits worth, until you're surer of what works for you and what you like.Hobo: We all dress up. We all put on our armour before we walk out the door, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re trying to be someone else.

More important, than any of ndf's category questions:
What's your desire?
Are you afraid of women, Doctor?
Of course.

Yes piss taken. I don't need help with what suits me or what designer to buy, more where to start. You guys are so lucky in the US and Europe that you have access to great clothing that goes on sale. In Australia there is F all choice and not sales like you have that reach 60% to 70% off. I am starting to do most of my buying off online stores. Should I just be concentrating on good quality basics to get me started, like a basic LUC knit, simple boots, grey trousers etc. Its easy to get side tracked with the star purchase. Do you guys ever plan a complete outfit or do they just fall together?

Again, it depends on what you like. I'd say your first piece should be a great leather jacket, but other people don't care for that kind of thing. Heirloom will tell you that your first piece must be a skirt, because this will somehow prove your manhood. It's hard to say.
